This is a tentative list of courses and schedule. There may be minor changes before the catalog is sent home.

 

 

 

Grades 3-5 Summer School 2018

 

Bee a reader (Mrs. Stousland)Do you enjoy reading, writing, and being creative? Let’s enjoy unforgettable reading stories, writing inventive pieces, and creating unique crafts together. We will practice and performa fun-filled Reader’s Theater and visit the library for daily take home books.

 

Beginning sewing (Mrs. Vieau) Did you ever want to learn how to sew? Now is your chance. All you need is to bring a sewing machine and some sewing supplies. Mrs. Vieau will talk to you before class begins to help you pick out some patterns and material.You may sign up for any of the periods, and you may also sign up for more than one period. You will need to supply your own materials. **Grades 4 and 5 only**

 

Breakout boxes (Miss Trevorrow)Join us for an exciting adventure of solving challenging  puzzles to gain clues to open up the locked breakout box. You and your team members will use critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity by working together to find the answers to the locks. Will you be able to breakout?

 

Ceramics Wheel (Mr. Larson)

Introduction and exploration of techniques associated with throwing on a potter's wheel will be explored. All materials will be provided.  Students can create functional items that can be used on a daily basis. Come spend the day creating bowls, tumblers, plates, serving trays, and more!  Students will have the opportunity to also explore and create sculptural pottery pieces. Day two will be used to glaze and decorate all your pottery pieces. The class will be held June 8 and 15th from 8 am to 12pm.You need to attend both sessions. Maximum 15 students.

 

Code.org (Miss Trevorrow) This computer science based class will focus on plugged (using technology) and unplugged (not using technology) coding. We will be focusing on skill building and creative problem solving to find multiple solutions to create our codes. No experience is required for this class. Come join us if you want to have a fun time learning something new!  **Grade 3 only**

 

Code.org (Miss Trevorrow)This computer science based class will focus on plugged (using technology) and unplugged (not using technology) coding. We will be solving challenging coding activities geared for upper elementary students that will prepare them to be creative problem solvers and thinkers. No experience is necessary - just come with a positive attitude and an excitement for coding. **Grades 4-5 only**

 

Crafts galore (Mrs. Faltz) We will be making a STEM or STEAM project each day along with several other crafts.  Some of the projects will be a catapult, bubble art, storm in a jar and a spinner using old CD or DVD’s.

 

Duct tape (Mrs. Faltz)We will use duct tape to create some fun crafts.  We will do some old crafts we have done before,  But there will be new projects! . Find out what amazing things you can make with duct tape.

 

Engineering unmake (Mr. Sturnick)  Do you like to take apart stuff to see how it works? And put it back together to see if it does work? Engineering is all about creating, solving problems, inventing, and dreaming of new things.This summer we will be tearing apart new electronic devices, household appliances, and motors. We’ll even try to put them back together. You can take this class if you took the Engineering class last summer. **Grade 5 only**

 

 

 

Green screen (Mr. Schulting) Be a newscaster, sportscaster, a talk show host, or anyone else on TV.  Have some fun and see what kind of TV personality you can be using green screen technology. **Grades 4 and 5 only**

 

H”app”y camper (Mrs. Gordon) Be a H”app”y Camper! We  will be using all kinds of educational iPad apps, with new ones added every day. Draw, create, read, play music--we will have lots of learning fun. **Grade 3 only**

 

Harry Potter (Mrs. Kittoe) Potter and Magic and Hogwarts, Oh My! Join us as we read the first book in the Harry Potter series, The Sorcerer's Stone. Students will read and discuss the book and complete crafts and activities to complement their reading. ** Grades 4 and 5 only**

 

Inventions (Mrs. Roenneburg) Do you like to build cool things? Would you like to build a balloon powered car, or a catapult, or a pencil-powered crossbow? Become an inventor!. Limit 8 students. **Grade 3 only**

 

Jewelry (Mr. Larson)Do you want to be adorned with items you create?  Jewelry making will look at jewelry throughout history, and you can create your very own using different braiding techniques.  Students will create their own pendants and beads out of clay, and use other different beads in the jewelry they design.

 

Legos fun (Mrs. Gordon)  Legos are tons of fun. We will have daily projects to design amazing structures and devices. Students will learn to follow detailed directions, and develop spatial awareness. **Grade 3 only**

 

Legos WeDo (Mr. Cleary)Students will learn to think like an engineer to  create and program their Lego creations. **Grades 3-4 only**

 

Legos WeDo intermediate level (Mr. Cleary) Students will use engineering techniques to program Lego creations. **Grades 4-5 only**

 

Loom knitting/crocheting (Mrs. Faltz)For the crafty student--Students will be able to make headbands, hats, scarves, and other neat things either by knitting or simple crochet. Everything will be provided to make your projects.This is a fun and easy skill to learn. Students who took the class last year can take it again this year.

 

Mask making (Mr. Larson)Come learn about masks from around the world and create your own!  Students have the option to create their very own masks using plaster or paper mache, and will decorate using paints, feathers, glitter and all those other fun crafty things!

 

Memories and me (Mrs. Archie) Do you remember a special vacation, or birthday party, or trip to the water park? We will be making memory scrapbooks about yourself, your family and your friends  **Grades 3 and 4 only**

 

Movement madness (Mrs. Eaton)  Do you want to be healthy and fit? We will explore exercises and activities that will give you a well-balanced connection between fitness and health. We will use a variety of PE equipment including balls, scooters, swinging/climbing rope, juggling scarves and more . Come join the fun and learn more about movement themes and principles.

 

Museum mystery (Mrs. Kittoe)If you lived during the time of King Tut, what would life be like?  Are mummies real? What is a sphinx? Learn the answers to these and many more questions while constructing replicas for a mini-museum.

 

Nature, gardens and art (Mrs. Archie)Do you like to look at caterpillars and flowers, and plant seeds and watch them grow? We will learn about where food comes from, and how to plan a garden. We will also be using our artistic skills to create cool rock animals,  paint planters and garden stones. **Grades 3 and 4 only**

 

Painting (Mr. Larson)Students will have the opportunity to paint and paint and paint!  We will look at different themes and subject matter and students will learn new painting techniques.  Watercolors, tempera, and acrylic paint will be explored.

 

Physics and flight (Mr. Sturnick) Heat, light, waves, motion, energy. We’ll explore the world of physics, and some aviation, too.

Puzzles, puzzles, puzzles (Mrs. Gordon)Do you love puzzles? You will be solving puzzles, putting them together, creating them, and working on word puzzles, too.  

 

Scavenger hunt (Mr. Schulting) Can you find it?  You may have to search all over the school, inside and out, to find the answers or clues.  It may involve information from a story. Or finding the area of the sidewalk. Or anything in between.  Different challenges and skills await as you hunt through school.. **Grades 3 and 4 only**

 

Sewing (Mrs. Vieau)Need a new robe, dress, pillowcases, or tote? Come join the fun in Summer Sewing. No experience necessary.  Bring your sewing machine, choose a project, and begin. We will have a student, parent, teacher shopping day before school is done to buy material, notions, and patterns. Please include a current phone number and parent email so we can organize the shopping day. You will need to bring your own supplies. This class may be taken for one, two or three periods. **Grades 4 and 5 only**

 

STEM challenge (Mr. Cleary)STEM means “science, technology, engineering and math”. Teaching STEM to students helps develop their curiosity and problem-solving skills. In this class, students will use an engineering mindset to creatively conquer different challenges that are presented to them.

 

Super brainy math (Mrs. Stousland) Let’s keep our math skills fresh with fun, hands-on, fast-paced games. Each day, we will learn two or three new and entertaining games to advance our understanding and skills with all kinds of mathematics. We will play kid-favorites like Tri-Facta and Math 24, as well as try some online games like Math Playground. **Grades 3 and 4 only**

 

Team power (Mr. Schulting)  Learning to work together as a team can help solve problems. You will learn to work together with your team to complete challenging activities, and learn strategies that will help complete your tasks. It’s like a Junior Survivor!

 

Wagons west! (Mrs. Kittoe)Pack up your wagon and set west for the Oregon Trail.  Join us as we take a "trip" on the Oregon Trail. We will learn about Westward Expansion as we simulate a wagon company's journey to the Pacific Ocean **Grades 4 and 5 only**

 

Wisconsin ecology (Mr. Sturnick) Learn all about the unique and fascinating animals and plants of Wisconsin. What part do these living things play in keeping our environment healthy? We’ll do fun activities with fur and skin and bones and teeth. **Grades 4 and 5 only**
